How does Taiwan’s government define “teaching license”? |

The Taiwanese government requires all public schools and registered private schools to employ teachers with a government teaching license (US), QTS (UK), SACE (South Africa), any government registered certificate, or at a minimum, a substitute teaching license. If you wish to work at a public school, you will need to have an unrestricted teaching license and a degree from an accredited University/College, which is listed on the Ministry of Education in Taiwan. If you apply without a government-issued teaching license, you must have taught English at an accredited school overseas or as a Foreign English Teaching Assistant at a public/accredited private school in Taiwan for more than one year. You would qualify for assistant teaching positions. |
Do my degree(s) need an apostille? Do they need to be notarized first at the Taiwanese embassy and then at the state department? |
Only documents that are issued in Afghanistan, Algeria, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, Cambodia, Cameroon, Cuba, Ghana, Iran, Iraq, Laos, Nepal, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, Senegal, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Syria, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia, need to be apostilled then notarized by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office nearby. |
What certificate would you need from the public school that I previously worked at? |
You will need to prove your experience with employment a certificate or a service record (including the specific time period you worked for them, name of the school, signature/stamp, contact information). |
Should I get a health check in my home country or in Taiwan? |
It is not necessary to get a health check for your work permit, but the school does require that you do this. You must do it in Taiwan after you arrive as it is only valid for three months In some specific school programs, you will have to have a health check before reporting to the school (full body check). Other programs require it only afterward. |
I am from the Philippines and wondering if I can apply for your teaching positions in Taiwan as a native English speaker? |
We accept applications from teachers who are from the Philippines if you are a professional teacher with experience and a clear English accent. Authentication Process:1. Please request your Official Transcript of Records from the university you graduated, with a remark for Abroad Purposes. 2. Have your Transcript of Record and the highest degree Diploma apostilled by CHED & DFA. 3. Your Professional Teaching License and the Criminal Background Check shall be authenticated at DFA to be apostilled. 4. After the procedures above mentioned, have those documents certified by Taiwan Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Manila. |
When is the peak season of recruitment for Taiwan’s public schools? When should I apply? |
The new school year starts in July and August. The second semester starts in January and February. Normally, the estimated time is about two months from the first interview to starting the new job. We recruit throughout the year to prepare for new school year. |
What is the next step after I send a copy of all required documents to you? |
Our recruiters will contact you to arrange an interview and then apply to any schools that have openings. We will contact you immediately once you are selected and then proceed with the work visa. |
What’s a typical teaching/work schedule like? |
It varies depending on the school but generally you will work from 8AM- 4PM Monday through Friday. Actual teaching hours are about 20-24 hours per week with the remaining time spent preparing for classes and meeting with your co-teacher and colleagues. You may also need to assist with school activities outside of the standard work hours, such as Christmas or sports day. |
Will there be any training or orientations prior to work? |
There will usually be training and orientation during the first week of school. If you start at the beginning of the school year, there will be workshops too. |
What are the tax and health insurance policies for foreign teachers in Taiwan? |
Regarding taxes, for the first 6 months of each fiscal year, you will have to pay 18% non-refundable tax if you arrive in Taiwan after July. Starting from the 7th month you will only have to pay 5%. If in that year you have stayed for longer than 183 days in Taiwan, you can get a tax refund of 13% for the first 6 months. The cycle repeats every year in January. |
Is there a maximum number of overtime hours I can be assigned per week? |
Normally you will not work overtime. Your contract states that you will have to work 40 hours a week. If in exceptional circumstances you are asked to work overtime, e.g. during a school event, you may use these hours as a compensatory leave in the following weeks. |
Will there be assistance for enrolling my children into school? Will you also be able to help my spouse find a job in Taiwan? |
It is recommended that you arrive in Taiwan alone and then apply for your family's ARC once you are settled. You'll be assigned a coordinator that will help you apply for your family members’ ARCs as well as assist you in enrolling your children into school. We can also help your spouse find a teaching position if they also hold a teaching license. |
May I bring my pet? Is there a quarantine for animals? |

You may bring your dependents with you to Taiwan when you get an offer to be an English teacher. PGA will assist you and your family in acquiring the appropriate visa so they can stay with you while you are working here. As for your children’s education, you can choose to send them to either a public or a private school. The tuition fee for public schools is a lot cheaper than any private or international schools. |
